Description
Most Christmas dog gear is loud. Ralphie Reindeer is not: soft tan reindeer on a crisp white ground, which reads as festive in a photograph and as a perfectly normal, rather smart collar the rest of the time. Nobody has to wrestle the dog into anything, and nobody has to take it off on Boxing Day. A seasonal collar that works for three weeks is an expensive novelty; this palette is neutral enough to carry on through summer.
Getting a puppy through their first Christmas
If there is a new puppy arriving, the X-Small is the puppy size and it is designed as one. Padded like the rest of the range but narrower at 1cm wide, it suits necks measuring 23.5cm to 28cm and sits lightly enough that a young dog stops noticing it within a day or two. That is the trick with a first collar: the less they think about it, the sooner you can clip a lead on. The sizes overlap deliberately from there, with Small covering 28cm to 44cm, so the collar bought at twelve weeks often still fits at six months.
Size guide
| Size | Neck | Width |
|---|---|---|
| X-Small | 23.5 to 28cm | 1cm |
| Small | 28 to 44cm | 1.5cm |
| Medium | 32 to 50cm | 2cm |
| Large | 46 to 71cm | 2.5cm |
How to measure
Take a soft tape around the base of the neck where the collar will actually sit, below the jawline, and leave two fingers of room between the tape and the coat. Match that number to the table. If it falls inside two bands, either works, and a dog who is still growing is better off in the larger of the two.
Padded, because Christmas dogs are excited dogs
The collar is built on solid neoprene padding, fully adjustable, with a plastic side-release buckle and a D-ring for the lead or an ID tag. Padding does its real work on the dog who hits the end of the lead when visitors arrive, since a thin unpadded strap turns that into one narrow band of pressure across the throat.
White background, real dog
A pale collar will pick up dirt, and this one is no exception. The good news is that it is properly washable: 30 degrees in a wash bag to keep the buckle and D-ring safe, then air dry rather than tumble dry. Heat, not mud, is what ruins a printed collar.
The reindeer print runs across the range, so the matching lead and a harness in the same design make a proper set for the photos.
