Description
This is the one people reach out and touch. Teddy Rupert is a soft, fluffy teddy fabric in a warm neutral brown, and on a curly coated dog it more or less disappears into them. It suits a particular sort of dog: the soft one, the one with a bit of character, the one who sleeps against your feet. On a cream or apricot coat it blends, on a black coat it reads as a warm band of texture, and either way it looks friendly rather than smart.
Soft on the outside, padded underneath
The teddy face sits over a collar built on solid neoprene padding, so the softness is structural rather than a surface finish. That combination is kind to a coat that mats. Thin webbing on a fluffy dog does two annoying things at once: it concentrates the pull into a narrow line across the throat, and it works the coat into a matted ring exactly where it sits. It is fully adjustable, fastened with a plastic side-release buckle, with a D-ring at the front for the lead or a name tag.
The puppy size
The X-Small is Cocopup London's puppy collar, narrower at 1cm wide but padded in the same way, made for necks of 23.5cm to 28cm. On a young dog that light, soft combination is about as unobjectionable as a first collar gets. From there the Small covers 28cm to 44cm, and since the bands overlap, one collar usually sees a puppy through a long stretch of growing.
Size guide
| Size | Neck | Width |
|---|---|---|
| X-Small | 23.5 to 28cm | 1cm |
| Small | 28 to 44cm | 1.5cm |
| Medium | 32 to 50cm | 2cm |
| Large | 46 to 71cm | 2.5cm |
Measuring a fluffy dog
Measure around the base of the neck where the collar will sit, pressing the tape gently through the coat to the body rather than measuring the hair, which on a teddy coat can add a couple of centimetres of fiction. Then leave two fingers of room between the tape and the coat. If you land between sizes, either will fit thanks to the overlap.
Does teddy fabric stay nice?
It wants a little more care than a flat print, which is a fair trade for how it feels. Wash it at 30 degrees in a wash bag, which protects the buckle and D-ring and keeps the pile from catching, then air dry it. No tumble dryer: heat flattens and mats a teddy texture, and once that has happened it does not come back.
Teddy Rupert has a matching lead, and for a soft coated dog the harness options are worth a look as a gentler alternative for walks.
