Buying it for someone else's dog
The honest difficulty with gifting a collar is sizing, so here is how to get it right without a tape measure and a suspicious dog. Look at how far the neck bands below overlap. A small dog is almost always covered by the Small, which runs 28cm to 44cm, and a big dog by the Large at 46cm to 71cm, because each size adjusts across a wide range rather than being a fixed length. If you genuinely cannot tell, size up: the buckle and slider will take it in, whereas nothing will make a collar longer.

If you can get near the dog, measure around the base of the neck where the collar sits rather than up under the jaw, and leave two fingers of room between the tape and the coat.
