Description
Winter is hard on a pale collar. Six weeks of wet grass, dark mornings and paddock mud, and the pastel one you loved in spring looks tired. Red and black tartan goes the other way: a dark, saturated check that carries dirt without showing it, and it stands out against a grey sky instead of vanishing into it. Tartan on a dog walk has looked right for about a century, which is the useful thing about a classic. It will not date next winter.

How to measure
Measure around the base of the neck where the collar will sit, keeping the tape below the jawline, and leave two fingers of room between the tape and the coat. Measure the dog rather than an old collar, since a worn collar has usually been let out and never put back.
Will the colour last?
Red is the colour people ask about, and how you wash it decides the answer. Wash at 30 degrees in a wash bag, which keeps the buckle and D-ring from being knocked about, then air dry. Hot washes and tumble dryers fade a printed collar and soften plastic hardware. The mud itself is not the problem.
