Description
Winter walks start in the dark and finish in the dark, and a tartan lead is the one accessory that looks better the worse the weather gets. Red and black check against a wet footpath, a frosty park or a dog in a coat is a combination that has worked for about two hundred years, and it still does.
Practically, a bold check earns its place. Dark leads vanish against dark ground the moment you put them down at the dog park, and red is the colour you spot first. The handle is padded, which matters far more in cold weather than warm, because cold hands grip harder and a thin strip of webbing digs in fast. The clip swivels so the lead does not corkscrew while your dog weaves around your legs on the way home.

How strong is it?
Worth knowing before you order rather than afterwards. Cocopup London is clear that this is not a heavy duty lead and that the range is built for smaller breeds and lighter use. What that buys you is a beautifully finished, comfortable everyday lead for a small or moderate dog. What it does not do is hold a big dog who pulls with real force, and if that is your dog, a heavy duty lead is the right call and we would rather tell you now.
Washing
Winter leads get filthy. Wash at 30 degrees in a wash bag so the clip does not batter your machine, then hang it up to dry. Do not tumble dry.
Tartan is the print people tend to buy as a full set, so have a look at the collars in matching prints and hang a poop bag holder on the handle D-ring, which is precisely what that ring was designed for. Other seasonal prints sit in the lead collection.
