If you keep Malawi mbuna or other plant eating African cichlids, the food you choose matters more than it does for most fish. Hikari Cichlid Excel is built for herbivorous cichlids and other plant eating tropical fish, on a base of easily digestible wheat germ with pure cultured spirulina.
Here is why that matters. Herbivorous cichlids have long digestive tracts evolved for grazing algae and plant matter off rock, and they are not equipped to process a rich, meat heavy diet. Feeding a high protein carnivore pellet to mbuna is one of the most common causes of digestive bloat in African cichlid tanks, and it is entirely avoidable. Excel keeps the protein deliberately lower and the plant content high, matching what these fish are built to eat. The spirulina also supports the natural colour that makes mbuna worth keeping in the first place.
Feed once or twice a day, offering only what your fish clear within a few minutes, and net out anything left over. Uneaten pellets break down into ammonia, which is exactly what you do not want in a cichlid tank.
