Description
Not every cichlid will come to the surface for food. Plenty of plant eating species graze low down, picking over rockwork and substrate, and a floating pellet simply sits up top while the shyer or more bottom oriented fish miss out. Hikari Cichlid Excel Sinking solves that by delivering the same herbivore formula in a pellet that drops to where those fish actually feed.
The recipe is the wheat germ and pure cultured spirulina blend used in standard Cichlid Excel, built for herbivorous cichlids and other plant eating fish. Wheat germ is easy on the gut, and the deliberately lower protein level suits fish whose digestive systems evolved for grazing rather than hunting. Feeding a rich carnivore diet to herbivorous cichlids is a well known route to digestive bloat, so matching the food to the species is not fussiness.
Feed once or twice daily, only as much as the tank clears within a few minutes. Sinking food is easy to overdo because you cannot see it float, so check the substrate afterwards and siphon out leftovers before they decay into ammonia.
