Lionhead, ranchu and the other round bodied fancy goldfish do not feed like a common goldfish. They are slow, they root along the bottom rather than racing to the surface, and their mouths are small. Hikari Lionhead Mini is a sinking daily diet made for exactly that, in a small pellet these fish can actually manage.
A sinking pellet solves a problem specific to fancy goldfish. When a deep bodied variety feeds at the surface it gulps air along with the food, and swallowed air is a well known contributor to buoyancy trouble in round bodied fish. Food that drops to where they naturally forage keeps their heads down and slows the whole feed, which also gives slower fancy varieties a fair chance against faster tank mates.
The bio-technology formulation is aimed at three things at once: stronger colour, good body and fin form as the fish develops, and long term health rather than fast growth alone. Feed once or twice a day, only what is cleared in a few minutes, and siphon out the rest, since goldfish are heavy waste producers and leftovers drive ammonia quickly.
