Marine fish are famously difficult to get eating, especially in the first weeks after they go into a new tank. Hikari Marine A is built around that problem, with an expanded, sponge like texture that mimics the soft foods these fish take in the wild rather than the hard dry pellet many of them refuse.
Texture matters more in a marine tank than most people expect. Wild reef fish graze on soft, absorbent prey and tissue, and a dense pellet does not read as food to them. The sponge structure also takes up water quickly, so the food softens as it enters the tank and stays workable in the mouth, which is often enough to persuade a reluctant new arrival to start feeding. Getting a new marine fish eating early is one of the better predictors of whether it settles.
Feed one or two times daily, only as much as the fish take within a few minutes, and use a turkey baster or feeding ring if flow scatters the food. Leftovers in a marine system still break down into ammonia, and skimmers do not catch everything.
