Description
The Pet Worx Aquarium Sponge Filter is the filter breeders reach for, in Mini, Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large. It runs off an air pump and airline rather than a motor of its own.
Its value is in what it does not do. A powered filter creates a strong intake, and in a tank holding fry or baby shrimp that intake is lethal: they get drawn against the strainer or pulled straight into the impeller. A sponge filter moves water by airlift, with rising bubbles drawing water up through a block of foam, so the pull at the sponge face is gentle enough that the smallest tank residents can swim past it unharmed.
The foam does both filtration jobs at once. Water passing through it leaves behind suspended debris, which is the mechanical side, while the enormous surface area inside the sponge gives beneficial bacteria somewhere to colonise. That colony is what converts fish waste from toxic ammonia through nitrite to far less harmful nitrate, and it is the part of a filter that really keeps fish alive. A mature sponge is also portable biological media: squeeze one out in a bucket of tank water and you can seed a new tank with an established colony instead of waiting weeks to cycle it.
