This API kit combines testing and correction in one box for freshwater aquariums. You get a pH test bottle, a capped glass test tube, a colour card and instructions, plus the pH adjusting solutions to act on what the test tells you. The test reads a wide range, from 6.0 all the way to 9.0, so it covers soft water community tanks at one end and African rift lake cichlid setups at the other.
The wide range is the real reason to pick this over a standard kit. Most everyday freshwater pH kits stop around 7.6, fine for tetras and gouramis but useless if you keep Malawi or Tanganyikan cichlids, goldfish in hard water, or a tank on alkaline substrate. Read the number, match it to the colour card, and the adjusters are already in the box.
Make it a weekly habit. pH moves as waste and uneaten food break down and as tap water goes in, and a new tank is least stable of all because its bacteria colony has not established. Test more often in those first weeks. When you adjust, go in small steps and retest, since pH is easy to overshoot and fish handle a steady reading better than a moving one.
