Description
The API pH Test Kit is a liquid test for freshwater aquariums that reads pH from 6.0 to 7.6. That band covers the range most tropical community tanks and planted tanks live in, so it is the everyday kit for anyone keeping tetras, rasboras, gouramis, corydoras, bettas or a general community setup.
Of the four readings that matter in fishkeeping, pH tells you how acidic or alkaline the water is. The other three describe the nitrogen cycle: ammonia from fish waste and uneaten food is toxic, nitrite is what bacteria turn ammonia into and is toxic too, and nitrate is the far safer end product removed by water changes. Water that drifts too acidic or too alkaline stresses fish and plants directly, and it also changes how toxic any ammonia present actually is, so the two are worth watching together.
A brand new aquarium needs testing far more often than an established one, because it has not yet grown the bacteria colony that processes waste. Test every day or two for the first few weeks, then weekly once readings hold steady, plus after adding fish or a large water change.
