Description
API Quick Start is a bottle of live nitrifying bacteria for freshwater and saltwater aquariums. Its job is to seed the filter with the bacteria that do the dangerous work of processing waste, so a brand new tank can take fish immediately instead of sitting empty for weeks.
This is the most common way new fishkeepers lose stock. Fish waste and uneaten food break down into ammonia, which is toxic. In a mature tank, bacteria in the filter media convert it into nitrite, also toxic, and then into nitrate, which is far less harmful and comes out with water changes. A tank filled yesterday has none of that colony, so ammonia climbs with nothing to process it, and the fish added in week one pay for it.
It is not only for new tanks. Adding a batch of fish, replacing filter media or finishing a course of medication all knock the colony back, and a dose helps the biological filter recover. Always dechlorinate first, since chlorine and chloramine kill these bacteria as readily as they harm fish.
- Contains live nitrifying bacteria, ready to go into the filter
