Description
You know the dog this is for. The one who shoves their nose under the doona and keeps going until only a tail is showing. The one who scratches a blanket into a pile before lying down, or sleeps in the gap behind the armchair rather than on the perfectly good bed you bought. That behaviour is denning, and an open bed asks a denning dog to do the work themselves every single night. The Hoodie Cuddler does it for them: a padded rim to curl against, with a soft hood arching over the top so the dog is roofed in as well as walled in. It also traps body heat, which is why whippets, greyhounds, small terriers and anything thin coated take to it fast in winter.
It is not a bed for every dog. A sprawler who sleeps flat on their side with their legs out will treat the hood as an obstacle. A thick coated dog, or any dog who pants through a warm night, will find the enclosed pocket too hot and go and lie on the tiles. And because the range stops at Large, which Snooza rates for medium breeds, there is nothing here for a Retriever or a Mastiff. If your dog is in any of those camps, an open cuddler or a flat mattress is the better buy and will get more use.
Size guide
| Size | Overall size | Inner sleeping area | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 50cm outer diameter x 40cm high | 30cm | Toy dogs (Chihuahua, Papillon, Maltese) |
| Medium | 70cm outer diameter x 44cm high | 40cm | Small dogs (Jack Russell, Cavalier, Pug) |
| Large | 90cm outer diameter x 54cm high | 50cm | Medium dogs (Beagle, Whippet, Terrier) |
Snooza's size guide leaves the large and giant dog categories blank for this bed, so Large is the top of the range rather than a size for a large breed. Read the size names as Snooza's labels, not as a description of your dog.
How to choose your size
This one runs smaller than the outer numbers suggest, because both the rim and the hood eat into the space. A Large measures 90cm across the outside but the dog only gets a 50cm pocket. Lie your dog down, measure nose to the base of the tail, add 15 to 20cm, then check that figure against the inner sleeping area rather than the overall diameter. Also give a thought to height: the hood is fixed, so a dog who likes to sit upright and look around needs enough clearance, and the quoted heights of 40cm, 44cm and 54cm are what you have to work with. Between two sizes, always take the bigger one. A hood that is too tight is the fastest way to a bed your dog refuses to enter.
- Hooded cave shape built for dogs that burrow, nest or dig at bedding
- 100% polyester covers in long pile Mink faux fur
- EcoFresh fill made from recycled PET drink bottles
- Hood and base covers both come off through hidden zips, and the fill washes too
- Warm hand wash or gentle cycle at 40C, line dry in the sun, fill washed in a laundry bag
- Do not tumble dry, iron, dry clean or bleach
The hood foam itself is not removable, so it stays in and washes along with the cover. Snooza does not list a non slip base on this model, so on polished floorboards it is worth putting it on a rug or in a corner.
