Description
The storm colourway of Snooza's hooded cave bed, bought most often for the dog who cannot switch off.
A dog that lifts its head at every car door, every hallway shadow and every flicker off the television is not resting, it is on duty. Reducing what the dog can see is one of the few things an owner can change without training, and that is the real work a hood does. Under it the dog loses the wide angle view of the room, keeps its own body heat in a small pocket of air, and gets the enclosed feeling it was chasing when it shoved itself under the bedspread. Storm is the darker of the two colourways, which is the practical pick if the bed lives in a busy part of the house or under a dog who comes in off wet grass.
Size guide
One size: 70cm long x 70cm wide x 45cm high. There is a single variant on this listing, shown at checkout as "Snooza - Hoodie Dream Cloud - Storm - Medium". The 45cm figure is the height of the hood, so it is the headroom your dog has once it is inside.
Will your dog fit
Measure the dog nose to base of tail lying stretched out on its side, then add 15cm to 20cm for comfort. Under 70cm and the fit is right. The reason this bed tolerates a curling dog so well is that a curled dog occupies a circle rather than a rectangle, so length matters less than it would on a flat mat, but a dog whose total comes in over 70cm will end up sleeping half in and half out. Check height too, by measuring your dog sitting from the floor to the top of the head: if that number crowds 45cm, the dog has to duck to get in and most will not bother. Where a dog is borderline on both numbers, this is the wrong style rather than the wrong size, and an open bolster bed is the safer purchase.
Honest limits first, because a hood is the easiest bed shape to buy wrong. It is a poor choice for a dog that sleeps flat out on its side with its legs extended, for a thick coated dog that seeks out tiles and floorboards in summer, and for any large breed, since there is no bigger version to move up to. It earns its place with a nervous dog, a small to medium dog that burrows, and a thin coated or elderly dog that feels the cold.
- Single size, 70cm x 70cm x 45cm high
- Soft foam hood under long pile calming faux fur
- Cover lifts off and machine washes warm, line dry or tumble dry low
- Washable filling that tumble dries on cool to recover its loft
- Base is treated to stop it sliding when a dog digs and circles
- Covers and inserts are repairable and replaceable rather than throwaway
That last point is the difference between this and a cheap supermarket cave bed. Because Snooza build the cover and the insert as separate replaceable parts, a flattened bed can be topped back up with Snoozafill refill and a popped seam can be closed with a sewing kit, instead of the whole thing going to landfill in year two. Air the bed and insert in the sun now and then, remove the cover before washing, and keep it away from the iron, the bleach and the dry cleaner. Snooza is an Australian owned manufacturer of more than thirty years and this bed is locally crafted. Also sold in olive if you would rather a lighter colour, and you can see the rest of the beds and mats to compare it against the open styles.
