Description
Built for the big dog who lives half outside: the one who sleeps on the decking, under the verandah or on the concrete by the back door, and who is starting to feel it in the mornings. The Ultra-Tuff Ortho Retreat is the outdoor answer to a problem indoor beds cannot solve, because faux fur and open weave fabrics do not survive rain, dirt and UV for long.
Underneath the water resistant shell is an orthopaedic foam base, and that is the part doing the real work. A dog lying on concrete or hardwood carries their entire weight on a handful of contact points, mostly the hips, the elbows and the point of the shoulder. Those joints stay compressed for the length of the sleep, circulation through the tissue over them drops, and the dog gets up stiff and sore. Foam that gives under the load and takes the shape of the body spreads that weight across the whole contact area instead, so nothing bears it alone. For a heavy breed, an arthritic dog or an older one, that is the difference between a comfortable night outside and a slow start to the day.
The bed sits low with an easy step through side, which matters for dogs who can no longer climb over a tall bolster.
Size guide
| Size | Dimensions | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Large/XL | 118cm (L) x 87cm (W) x 19cm (H) | Large dogs such as a Boxer, Retriever or Dalmatian, and giant dogs such as a Mastiff, Great Dane or Rottweiler |
About that size name. Snooza makes the Ultra-Tuff Ortho Retreat in two compound sizes only, M/L and L/XL, and each one spans two conventional bed sizes rather than being a single Medium or a single Large. Large/XL is the bigger of the two, not a middle size. For reference, the smaller M/L bed measures 105 x 77 x 20cm, so the Large/XL you are looking at here is 13cm longer and 10cm wider. Only the Large/XL is stocked at Celeste Pets.
How to choose your size
With one size available, the question is simply whether your dog fits. Measure them nose to base of tail while they are lying stretched out on their side, then add 15cm to 20cm and compare that against the 118cm length. A dog who sprawls flat needs the full 87cm of width as well, so check both numbers. A dog who curls will use far less of it. Snooza recommends this size for both the large and giant dog categories, so if your dog is anywhere in that bracket you are in the right place. Anything smaller than a large breed will still be comfortable, just with room to spare. Snooza measures soft goods as accurately as they can, so treat the figures as close approximations.

Where it earns its price is durability plus support in the same bed, which most outdoor beds skip. Where it falls short: water resistant is not the same as waterproof on the top surface, so it wants a covered spot rather than open lawn in a downpour, and no fabric bed survives a dedicated chewer. If your dog destroys bedding, an elevated trampoline style frame is the safer buy. Browse every bed and mat to see the outdoor options side by side.
