Open plan houses are hard on light sleepers. There is no dim corner, the television is always in view, and a dog on an open bed in the middle of all that never quite switches off. The hood on this bed solves a physical problem rather than an emotional one: it puts a roof over the dog, cutting the light, softening the noise and blocking the draught that runs along a floor, so the dog has a shaded pocket in a room that does not otherwise offer one. The padded rim underneath does the rest of the work, giving them a wall to press into and a raised edge to rest their chin on.
Silver Fox is the cooler of the two finishes, a long pile grey with pale tips. It reads as a piece of furniture rather than a pet product, which matters if the bed has to live in the lounge room instead of the laundry.

How to choose your size
Start with the third column. The outer diameter includes the rim and the hood wall, so the floor area your dog actually gets is far smaller: 90cm on the outside becomes a 50cm pocket on the inside. Measure your dog nose to base of tail while they are lying down, add 15 to 20cm for the curl, and check that against the inner figure. Then check the height, which most people skip. A dog that likes to sit up and watch the room needs headroom under a fixed hood, and 40cm, 44cm and 54cm are the three you can choose from. If your dog falls between two sizes, or if they are still filling out, take the larger. A pocket that feels tight is a pocket a dog will not use twice.
Who should skip it: dogs who sleep stretched flat rather than curled, dogs who run hot or have a dense double coat, and anything bigger than a medium breed, because the sizing stops short of them. For those dogs an open rimmed cuddler or a flat orthopaedic mattress is the better spend.
