Giving it to a fussy dog

Coat and skin changes run on a slower clock because the coat has to grow out, so give those six to eight weeks before you judge whether a product is working. If your dog has ongoing diarrhoea, blood in the stool, or is losing weight, that is a veterinary appointment, not a supplement.

There is no single best one. For everyday maintenance a multi-strain powder with a prebiotic included covers the most ground. For a specific issue such as loose stools after antibiotics, or anal gland trouble, a targeted formula will do more than a general one.

Can I give my dog human probiotics?

It is not advised. Dogs and humans carry different dominant gut bacteria, so human strains are a poor match, and some human products include sweeteners such as xylitol that are toxic to dogs. Use a formula made for dogs.

How long can a dog stay on a probiotic?

Probiotic powders are generally designed for ongoing daily use rather than short courses. If you are giving one for a specific short-term reason, such as a diet change or a course of antibiotics, two to four weeks is a common window. Check the label and ask your vet if your dog has an existing condition.

Do probiotics help with a dog's bad breath or wind?
