Imidacloprid, the active ingredient, works topically on the skin surface rather than through the bloodstream, killing fleas through contact rather than requiring a flea to bite first. Between 98 and 100% of fleas are typically killed within 12 hours, and protection lasts around 30 days. Advantage treats fleas only, it does not provide heartworm or intestinal worm coverage, which Advocate is formulated to address.
