Compostable, degradable or plain plastic

The labels on poo bags are used loosely and the differences are real. It is worth two minutes to understand what you are buying.

• Certified compostable bags are made from plant starches and are certified to break down under specific composting conditions within a set timeframe. This is the strongest claim on the shelf and the one backed by a standard.
• Biodegradable on its own is a weak term. Almost anything biodegrades eventually. Without a certification and a timeframe attached, the word tells you very little.
• Oxo-degradable bags are conventional plastic with an additive that makes them fragment faster. They become microplastic rather than disappearing, and several jurisdictions have moved against them.
• Conventional plastic bags are the cheapest and often the strongest. If your council sends waste to landfill regardless, the environmental difference at disposal is smaller than the labels suggest.

What separates a good bag from a bad one

• Thickness. Measured in microns. Thin bags tear at the worst possible moment. Compostable bags are usually made thicker to compensate for the softer material.
• Opacity. A fully opaque bag is more pleasant to carry to the next bin.
• Handles or no handles. Handled bags tie faster and more securely, which matters if you have arthritic hands or a dog pulling at the other end.
• Roll versus flat pack. Rolls fit standard holders. Flat packs suit a pocket or the side of a walking bag.
• Scented or unscented. Scent masks rather than removes, and some dogs find heavy fragrance off-putting on the walk.

Disposal in Australia

Council rules differ. Most Australian councils want dog waste in the general waste bin, not the green organics bin, even when the bag itself is compostable, because domestic pet waste can carry pathogens that home and municipal composting does not reliably kill. Check your own council before assuming otherwise. Never flush bags, compostable or not.

How many poo bags do I need?

Most dogs go once or twice per walk. For a dog walked twice daily, a 240 bag pack is roughly two to four months. Buying the larger pack usually works out cheaper per bag.

Do the bags fit a standard holder?

Rolled bags fit most standard dispensers. Flat packs and handled bags generally do not, so check the format before buying if you already own a holder.
