Fish Food by Species

The most common feeding mistake is buying a generic tropical flake for a fish that cannot physically use it. Fish feed at different levels of the tank, and food that floats when your fish are bottom feeders simply decays and pollutes the water. Match the food to the fish.

Surface Feeders

Water Care and Why New Tanks Lose Fish

Most fish deaths in a new aquarium are not disease. They are water chemistry, and they are preventable.

Tap water in Australia contains chlorine and chloramine. Both kill fish, and both kill the beneficial bacteria that a filter depends on. A water conditioner such as Tetra AquaSafe, API Stress Coat or API Tap Water Conditioner neutralises them and should be used on every water change, not just at setup.

Beyond that is the nitrogen cycle. Fish waste and uneaten food break down into ammonia, which is toxic even in small amounts. Beneficial bacteria living in your filter media convert ammonia into nitrite, which is also toxic, and then into nitrate, which is far less harmful and is removed by regular partial water changes. A brand new tank has not yet grown those bacteria, which is exactly why fish added in week one often die while everything looks clean. Testing Your Water

When fish look unwell, water quality is the first thing to rule out, not the last. A test kit answers the question that guessing cannot. Ammonia and nitrite should both read zero in an established tank, nitrate should be kept low by water changes, and pH matters less for its exact number than for staying stable.

White spot, or ich, is the most common freshwater disease and shows as small white dots across the body and fins. It spreads fast. How often should I feed my fish?

Why do my fish keep dying in a new tank?

Usually because the tank has not cycled. A new aquarium has not yet grown the beneficial bacteria that convert toxic ammonia from fish waste into nitrite and then nitrate. Use a water conditioner on every fill, add a bacterial starter, stock slowly, and test ammonia and nitrite until both hold at zero.

Do I really need a water conditioner?
